D0es Athletic Pilates Build Muscle?

It's one of the questions we hear most often from new clients:

“Can Pilates actually build muscle?”

The answer is yes! Especially when you're practicing Athletic Pilates.

At HGF, our 45-minute classes combine variable spring-based resistance, intentional movement, and athletic programming to create a workout that challenges your entire body. While Athletic Pilates won't build muscle in the same way as traditional bodybuilding, it absolutely helps you develop lean muscle, improve strength, and increase muscular endurance.

How Does Athletic Pilates Build Muscle?

Instead of relying on heavy weights or momentum, you'll spend more time under tension, keeping your muscles engaged from the start of class to the finish.

Athletic Pilates primarily challenges your slow-twitch muscle fibers, the muscles responsible for stability, posture, balance, and muscular endurance. These are the muscles you rely on every day. Think standing taller, carrying groceries, chasing after your kids, or simply moving through life with ease and less fatigue.

As the intensity builds throughout class, and you begin to move through quick transitions, you'll also start recruit fast-twitch muscle fibers that generate power and strength. Together, these muscle systems help you build functional muscle that supports everything you do, both inside and outside the studio.

What Results Can You Expect?

With consistency, Athletic Pilates can help you:

  • Build lean, functional muscle

  • Improve total-body strength

  • Increase muscular endurance

  • Enhance posture and balance

  • Move with more confidence in everyday life

Many members are surprised that the first thing they notice isn't how they look, it's how much stronger they start to feel. Whether it's finishing a long day with more energy, or crush a hike while carrying your toddler plus five bags, the benefits of Athletic Pilates will take you beyond the machine!

How Often Should You Take Class?

For most members, we recommend attending 2–4 classes per week. Like any strength-based workout, consistency is what drives real results. As you become stronger, you'll continue to challenge yourself by increasing spring resistance, slowing down the moves, and then moving faster through transitions.

The Bottom Line

Athletic Pilates is a full-body strength workout that combines resistance, control, and intentional movement to build lean muscle, improve endurance, and help you move better every day.

We believe strength is about more than lifting heavier. It's about feeling confident, moving well, and proving to yourself that you're capable of more than you thought when you first walked through our doors.
